Silent Night

Silent Night                                                                                          Olga Otte

Can I be quiet for a long time!? I don’t have a good track record for being still for long periods of time. Yet it was on a silent, holy night that the words of this favorite Christmas Carol came to Josef Mohr. As he walked the majestically silent Austrian Alps to visit a newborn child in his parish, those words appeared in his heart.

We who live out in the country can know what true quiet can be – no traffic or other man-made noises to disturb the peace. Do we take advantage of that? Maybe God wants us to seek these quiet times and places so that we can more clearly hear him speaking to our hearts. I know I am tempted to turn on the TV, play a game on the phone, read a book or newspaper – so much to stop me from being quiet enough to really listen to what God might be saying to me.

So in this Advent time let’s give God the chance to speak to us through the silence.

“Be still and know that I am God.” ~ Psalm 46:10a

Dear God, quiet our hearts so that we may hear you. Amen
